As soon as you're signed up for Smith.ai and have completed setting up your AI Voice Assistant, follow the directions below to change the settings in your 8×8 account to ensure your calls are being forwarded correctly.

Getting your Smith.ai phone number

  1. Go to the Call Handling page of your Voice Assistant dashboard: https://app.smith.ai/vr/call-handling/
  2. Your Smith.ai number is at the top of the page. Copy it as we'll use it later.
  3. Follow the instructions below based on how you wish to forward your calls from 8x8.

Forwarding calls from 8×8 to Voice Assistant

8×8 may change its interface over time, so now we recommend just going to their instructions here to configure call forwarding rules:

How to forward your calls from your Admin Console

  1. Log into your Portal.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Open your Account Settings.
  4. Click on Call Forwarding Rules. Click the pencil icon to edit the call forwarding rules.
  5. In the Forwarding window, type in your Smith.ai number in the Select target box, and it will register it as an external number. Click Save.
  6. Click Save again at the bottom of the Call Forwarding Rules page.

Important tips:

  • Some users prefer to ring their personal cell number for 5–8 seconds, then fall back on their Smith.ai receptionists. If you choose to do this:
    • Do not allow more than 10 seconds ring time to your cell phone. Even in this case, many callers may hang up before the call reaches the receptionists.
  • If your Voice Assistant has you as a transfer destination, the number must be different (e.g., transferred calls must go directly to your cell phone) than your main 8×8 number. Otherwise, it'll get stuck in an infinite loop!
