As soon as you're signed up for Smith.ai and have completed setting up your AI Voice Assistant, follow the directions below to change the settings in your Google Voice account to ensure your calls are being forwarded correctly.

Getting your Smith.ai phone number

  1. Go to the Call Handling page of your Voice Assistant dashboard: https://app.smith.ai/vr/call-handling/
  2. Your Smith.ai number is at the top of the page. Copy it as we'll use it later.
  3. Follow the instructions below based on how you wish to forward your calls from Google Voice.

Forwarding calls from Google Voice to Voice Assistant

Google Voice may change its interface over time, so now we recommend just going to their instructions here to configure call forwarding rules:

Important tips:

  • Ensure that all devices are switched off in your Google Voice Settings, usually under the “Calls” menu. Directly below this is where you will see your Smith.ai Number enabled for Call Forwarding.
  • Some users prefer to ring their personal cell number for 5–8 seconds, then fall back on their Smith.ai receptionists. Google Voice does not offer this option at the time of writing.
    • One possible workaround is to forward all calls to your personal cell phone and then rely on your cell phone provider to do conditional call forwarding.
  • If your Voice Assistant has you as a transfer destination, the number must be different (e.g., transferred calls must go directly to your cell phone) than your main Google Voice number. Otherwise, it'll get stuck in an infinite loop!
