How to Forward Your Calls

To turn on your AI Receptionist, forward your business calls to Smith.ai. This happens on the phone provider's website, not in Smith.ai.

Before you start, grab your Smith.ai phone number. You'll enter it as the forwarding destination.

Getting your Smith.ai phone number

From your Call Handling page in the dashboard, copy your Smith.ai number at the top.

Then scroll down, find your provider, and follow its guide to enter that number as your forwarding destination.

Test it before you consider it done

Call your business number from a different phone. If it connects to your AI Receptionist, forwarding is live. If it isn't, the fix is almost always back in your provider's settings, not in Smith.ai.

Common setup issues

  • Ring-all settings block forwarding. If your provider is set to ring your desk phone, your cell, and Smith.ai at once, calls may never actually reach us. Turn off the other devices for the number you're forwarding.

  • Loop your transfer number correctly. If your AI Receptionist transfers calls back to you, that number needs to be different from the line you just forwarded, or callers get stuck in a loop.

  • Some providers can't ring-then-fail-over. A few systems don't support "ring my cell first, then Smith.ai." Check your specific provider's guide above for what it supports.
